Our Beginnings

Welcome to Oriental Distilling Co., founded in 2020 by Janice Jiang, Andy Urban and partner Jeff Huang. It has been a curious road to where we are now, in even more curious times. Born out of a passion to create distinctive and delicious tipples, we don’t offer any Bullsh*t but perhaps a bit of Romance, Poetry and a good time with great Spirits. 

Jeff is one of China’s finest pioneering artisan brewers and has been making exceptional quality and award-winning artisan beers for over a decade. His next goal is to enable more people to have access to premium artisanal spirits distilled in China.

Andy comes from a family of distillers and brewers, having spent his downtime perfecting his craft, producing micro-batch spirits in Australia and learning from master distillers from various distilleries across Australia where he honed his craft since a young age. He is the perfectionist who is always pushing for ever higher standards of quality, flavour and innovation. The Australian way of distilling is unique, we are never the ones to rest on our laurels, always being curious, seeing opportunity for innovation where others do not, leading to sensational award-winning spirits.

Janice has lived in Australia for over a decade, realising the differences of drinking culture and perception of spirits amongst the general public between the East and the West. Another drive behind our endeavour is to educate people about western alcohol culture. We have also introduced Gin School as part of our educational program, allowing the general public to create their own gin under the guidance of our distiller. 

It was Andy's start as a budding marine biologist that ultimately led to our ethics and conservation endeavour. Seeing the diversity of aquatic life at great dive sites deteriorate over the years was a driving force for change and to educate the community about un-sustainable fishing practices and the environmental harm it does. Our vision being to create a company specialised in premium spirits with an awesome environmental cause. 

We are a boutique distillery producing a diverse range of London Dry & Contemporary Australian Gins, Vodkas, Rums, Absinthe and Liqueurs as well as offering bespoke collaborations, limited releases, corporate small batch and distilling experiences. Everything we do is fully transparent, never forsaking quality, all our products are distilled, bottled and labelled by hand at our urban distillery.

We are proud to share our distinctive and innovative range honouring and respecting all the exceptional and unique botanicals available to us here in China. All of our botanicals are ethically sourced either from our own farm or from pesticide-free farms around China, and what isn’t available locally we import the best of. We use a slow and methodic approach to distillation in our custom-made full copper still. Never chill-filtered always full of flavour.

Conservation is a big part of our beliefs and ethos, minimizing waste and damage to the environment. We aim to be 100% carbon neutral by 2022 with offset planting of trees and using sustainable production techniques utilizing solar panels and water recycling. Our Mission is to bring light to the plight of Su Mei, the majestic Humphead Wrasse.
